How to be Horrid: A Sketch Show - Fairly Familiar Things

Average rating:

A witty and wonderful comedy collation without rape and knob jokes. 'Hell is other people' is an obvious thing to say but it's also very, very true. Let us show you why.

Audience Reviews

Jim Wright's rating

How to be Horrid, probably breaches the trade’s descriptions act, a more accurate title would be "How to Waste an Hour of your Life". At first I thought it was me, maybe the reason I am not enjoying myself was my sense of humor,  but looking along the row I saw the same dead beat faces, clapping to uphold politeness, not to congratulate the cast.

It seemed the cast had expensed a large amount of money on a toy gun, for the same prop kept appearing act after act, the other accessory being the lead protagonists blonde bouffant which he kept raking his fingers through whilst avoiding eye contact with his surroundings.

At least the cast seemed to enjoy themselves; unfortunately we were the ones paying.

Who should go see it.
I enjoyed the carpet more than the show, so anybody who enjoys carpet is in for a good time.

Calum Willins's rating

I really enjoyed the show; maybe the other reviewer caught them on a bad night? I thoroughly enjoyed the show on the night I went, and everyone else in the audience seemed to feel the same way. It's all a bit silly, but there's a lot of genuinely clever stuff in there. It's hardly groundbreaking stuff, but never a "waste of an hour". Good stuff; glad I saw it.

Who should go see it.
Someone who's after a cynical chuckle in the evening.

Fen Crosbie's rating

This was a student sketch show which was an excellent example of its genre.  Unlike many of its kind, it avoided cliche and generally went for the wry smile rather than the belly laugh, which is all to the good. The cast delivered the material with panache and excellent comic timing, and the variation in styles, from the quietly witty delivery of the author, David K Barnes, to the broader humour of other actors, provided enough variation to engage the audience's interest throughout. Highly recommended.

Who should go see it.
Someone who enjoys a slightly offbeat and surreal type of humour.

Joolz Welch's rating

Was Jim Wright actually at the same show? As Calum Willins observes, it must have been an off night; i caught this show on the 15th and the audience seemed genuinely to be enjoying themselves. Only goes to prove the old adage, you can't please all of the people all of the time! Some of the sketches are better than others, but on the whole this is a well written show - David K Barnes is a name we could well be hearing more of in the future. The cast is most engaging and features some very good comic actors. Definitely worth seeing.

Who should go see it.
Possibly anyone who enjoys the early Python work, 'A Bit of Fry and Laurie' etc.
