Nicola's rating

This was a fabulous experience from start to finish. The cast welcomed us warmly and seemed genuinely pleased to have us there - and then the adventure started! With very atmospheric chanting, we were taken to a volcanic island where the inhabitants are live in clans - Air, Water, Flame and Soil - and have very defined roles. Loam, a Soil wants to break free from this structure and the play follows his quest. There is magical use of props in a very basic set - I fully believed in the volcano, and the way that a large cloth transformed into so many things was astonishing! The use of sound was quite special too - I've still got the chanting stuck in my head... and the thunderstorm was amazing - the audience got to play its part in that...

There is quite a lot of tension in the play - when Loam and Asha (a Flame girl who also wants to break free) are cast out from their society to be put to death, and when Loam and Shell (a Spray Rider he meets) encounter the shark, for example, but it is nicely balanced by humour (watch out for Nimbus!) and the generally uplifting feel generated by a very energetic and capable cast. I don't want to tell too much about the story, as part of the enjoyment were the surprises and twists...

Who should go see it.
I think anybody - apart from very young children (say the under sixes ) would love this show - I wish I'd seen something like it as a child, I would have adored it! As it was, my 'grown up' self was totally enthralled!

I'm so glad that intelligent, poetic and original work is being produced for children, and I hope that as many as possible get the chance to see it, so often all the theatre they are offered are 'live' versions of TV shows or book adaptations.
